North One Garden Centre, which is situated in Islington, north London, has proven skill and expertise in the art of urban retailing where space is at a premium and 70 per cent of the customers are aged under 40. North One has consistently led the way for urban garden centres and continues to build its customer base and deliver impressive sales growth year on year. The centre’s founder, Beryl Henderson, oversees the business, providing valuable input and guidance based on her years of knowledge of the industry and the business specifically. Creative director Paul Holt has been instrumental in building North One’s reputation as a go-to destination for an amazing selection of interior products, including unusual houseplants and fabulous pots. The main team working alongside Holt is comprised of staff who have been with the garden centre for more than five years, and their dedication to delivering excellent, informed and friendly customer service is at the core of North One’s continuing success. Louise Alhadeff, North One’s plant director, works with the outdoor plant team to ensure that the quality and range of all the plants on offer are maintained to the highest possible standard, sourcing from specialist nurseries across the country. Sales of outdoor plants continue to make up 50 per cent of the centre’s overall annual turnover. Strong demand for outdoor plants remains but year-round houseplant sales have helped to weather-proof the business. Rather than diversifying, North One has stuck to its core values of selling plants and plantrelated products. The garden centre is prominent in the print media and on the radio, while its social media following continues to grow. Instagram followers organically rose by 300 per cent between January 2017 and January 2018 without paid promotions. With no space to expand, North One has recently extended opening hours and now offers a seven-days-aweek delivery service. In this way the centre hopes to continue to grow and build on the success of 2017.
